At 60, a woman pursues a second child and achieves success on her second IVF attempt!
What if you were in your forties, fifties, or even older—would you have the courage to have another child?
Today’s story is about a couple from Suzhou, China, living in Japan. At the age of 66, after a two-year journey, they joyfully welcomed a baby girl last August. For them, being 60 was not a barrier to giving birth, and the arrival of new life marked the beginning of a fresh chapter in their lives.
1. Their son chose a DINK lifestyle, so the couple pursued a second child via IVF at 60
For many, having an IVF baby in one’s sixties seems almost unimaginable—but for Mr. Yu and his wife, anything was possible.
A few years ago, their only son candidly told them he wanted to live a DINK (Double Income, No Kids) life. As parents eager for grandchildren, this news left them frustrated and worried, but nothing they said changed his mind.
Then, in 2021, Mrs. Yu made a bold decision: they would have a second child. At 60 and post-menopause, natural conception was impossible. Through a friend’s introduction, they reached Uterus International Medical to pursue IVF for a second child. After thorough testing, they decided to use Mr. Yu’s sperm and a donor egg.
2. Success on the second IVF attempt
“We discussed this decision repeatedly and carefully. We felt it was feasible and that we could support the child throughout life,” the couple shared. From conception to raising a child to adulthood, they understood this would be a long, ongoing commitment—and they were ready.
In August 2022, after selecting a surrogate mother, they began embryo transfer. The first attempt failed, but the second transfer with a female embryo succeeded. On August 12, 2023, at 14:47, they welcomed a healthy baby girl weighing 2773g and measuring 49cm.
This story proves that having an IVF baby at an advanced age is possible—but it requires careful consideration of both physical and psychological challenges.
